Dr. Raymond K.F. Ch’ien is non-executive director & chairman of the board of directors (the “Board”) of our Company. Dr. Ch’ien served as an executive director of the Company from November 1999 to October 2005 at which point he was re-designated as a non-executive director. He is also a member of the executive and remuneration committee of our Company. As chairman of the Board, Dr. Ch’ien’s role is to ensure that the Board works effectively and discharges its responsibilities, encourage all directors to make a full and active contribution to the Board’s affairs and taking the lead to ensure that the Board acts in the best interests of the Company. Dr. Ch’ien has previously served as executive chairman of the Board of CDC Corporation (“CDC”), the ultimate parent company of our Company, from April 2001 until August 2005 at which point he became chairman of the Board of CDC. He served as acting chief executive officer of CDC between March 2004 and March 2005 and chief executive officer from March 2005 until August 2005. Dr. Ch’ien is also chairman of MTR Corporation Limited and serves on the boards of HSBC Holdings plc, The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited, Inchcape plc, Convenience Retail Asia Limited, VTech Holdings Limited and The Wharf (Holdings) Limited. Dr. Ch’ien is also an independent non-executive director and chairman of Hang Seng Bank Limited. Dr. Ch’ien received a doctoral degree in economics from the University of Pennsylvania in 1978. He was appointed a Justice of the Peace in 1993 and a Commander in the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire in 1994. In 1999, he was awarded the Gold Bauhinia Star medal. |
